Labuschagne Involvement From many records and references it is evident that the Labuschagne family had a major involvement in the Anglo-Boer War. Anglo Boer War medal that was awarded to Burghers who fought, and who applied for it years after the war.. MSK (Matie) Joubert displaying the Red Cross flag which her father, LJ (Len) Labuschagne used when he rescued his father, IH (Izak) Labuschagne at the Tugela front. According to the story, his father was hit during one of the battles. He was lying severely wounded between the British and Boer lines, with bullets flying thick and fast overhead. Seeing his father thus, his 19-year old son ripped the flag off the nearest Red Cross ambulance, and holding it up high, he charged in amongst the flying bullets and dragged his father out. His father recovered from his injuries and passed away on 31 December 1935. He is buried on his farm Boschbank, between Wakkerstroom and Amersfoort. Photo: December 2003. |
