Family Register

Descendants of Pieter Labuscaigne
(Family register)

NOTE: The information supplied is intended for personal use only. It may not be used for commercial purposes. © H. Labuschagne. 2004. No liability is accepted in any way or form. This family register is updated periodically as new data is added. As far as is known, the Labuschagne Family Register is currently the largest Labuschagne family register in existence. Nevertheless, it is far from complete and your assistance is required in order to help it grow.

Crediting Sources

Beginners often make the mistake of not thinking about making notes about where they had obtained every bit of information that they add to their family trees. Initially many think that they will compile only their immediate family branch and that they will remember where the information had originated from. In many cases, however, this soon grows into a much larger than intended project, and it may then become impossible to verify facts or check on certain information if the need should arise. For this reason it is strongly suggested that all sources of data should be clearly indicated right from the beginning in such a manner that anyone should later be able to track down exactly where the information had come from.

Suggestion on how to credit this source: It is suggested that this family register be quoted as follows:
Private Labuschagne Family Register compiled by Herman Labuschagne
PO Box 28, Florida, Johannesburg, 1710, South Africa
Tel: (011) 474 1916
Fax: (011) 473 1978
Email: mellivora@hotmail.com or mellivora@mweb.co.za

Note that the Labuschagne register exists as an electronic database which is much larger than the brief outline provided here. As far as possible, sources for data hav been recorded in detail. Exact sources may be queried at the email address above.

Reporting errors

Practically every reasonably large family database in the world contains a significant amount of errors. Errors may be due to erroneous data as might have been recorded by family members on death notices, in last wills and testaments, or on tombstone inscriptions. They may also arise from faulty data input through typing errors or other natural mistakes. The important thing is that such errors should be recognized and corrected when found. Users are urged to please report any errors or discrepancies they may find to mellivora@hotmail.com or mellivora@mweb.co.za  in order that they make be corrected on the family database. Remember, your correction might just set straight the history which will be used by generations to come, and it may well be that you could be the only one left that would know about it.

Contributing new data

No family register is ever complete. The Labuschagne Family Register is still missing thousands of names--even entire family branches. Tens of thousands of dates, and volumes of personal information is still missing. If you are able to add a missing name or date, a picture, a story or some personal background about an individual or a group of individuals, you are urged to share them by sending a note to mellivora@hotmail.com or mellivora@mweb.co.za . Compiling the biggest Labuschagne family register in the world is beyond the ability of any single human being. It can only happen through the combined efforts of many different people from all around the world. By unselfishly sharing the information you will be helping to help scores of others. Remember that genealogy and love is very much the same thing--the more you give, the more you receive. See the notice about privacy of data below.

What to do if you are not listed in the Labuschagne Family Register

Many modern families will not even find their great-grandparents listed in the Labuschagne Family Register. This is simply because either it hasn't been possible to link their branch to the correct ancestor yet, or simply because their information is not available. Even if you cannot see where you should be linked to the family register at all, you can still provide your personal details and those of as many of your children, uncles, aunts, spouses, grandparents or other family members, as you can. These details are kept in files which are periodically referred to until hopefully one day it will be possible to link them to the big family tree. Remember, there are thousands of Labuschagnes alive today who might never be recorded into one single database unless at least some of them are willing to contribute information. Some of the branches who have different family names are also researched extensively and are recorded in the electronic database. If you suspect that your query might involve one of these branches, you are welcome to make contact. Some examples would be the families Kolbe, Minnaar/Mesnard, Vermaak, Roux, Diedericks, Hobbs, Foxcroft, Klopper, Beytel, Du Toit, Van Breda and others.

Privacy of data

Contributors to the Labuschagne Family Register must realize and accept that all data submitted can or will be included in the family register for the benefit of others. All such data could be used commercially if it should become necessary or possible to sell an expanded family register in book form in the future. (There are no such plans at present). If you would like to keep any information private, this should be clearly indicated. The information will then be added to the electronic register, but it will be marked as private so that the information will not be shared publically in any report without the express consent of the contributor. If you do not wish your data to be included in the family register at all, you should rather not submit it.

You should not submit data about currently living persons if you suspect that they might object to such details being publically available. In general, information such as names, dates and family associations would not normally be considered too private to share, since in theory, this information could be obtained from other public sources. One should, however, use wisdom and discretion, especially in the case where sensitive family information such as adoptions or illigitimate children are concerned. If in doubt, it is best to obtain consent from the affected parties first, or to submit the information clearly marked as "Private and sensitive. Not for public distribution."

Copyright

Individual data is not subject to copyright. This means that individual names and dates may be used by anyone for reasonable purposes. When data is compiled into logical sequences or special formats, such as in a family tree or family database, such data then becomes information.

Information constitutes intelectual property, which is protected by international and national legislation. A complete family register, for example, would be considered "information" and may not be freely used without the consent of the author. Its sum parts, on the other hand, would be considered "data" and may generally be used freely. Broadly-speaking, copyright legislation allows quoting pieces of impormation based on a "fair usage" principle, and providing that the source should be clearly acknowledged.

For practical purposes, family registers operate in a grey area between the concepts of data and information and there are few firm rules. Data is frequently exchanged between different family registers, which simply has to be cross-referenced. As a general principle, one should always make the effort of respecting the work of others by not copying and distributing information indiscriminately. Most researchers are more than willing to share information, but they do object to being taken advantage of.
