Labuschagne Nobility

The holy grail of many genealogists is to be able to find some link to nobility somewhere in the mists of time. It is sometimes said that "snobs talk as if they had begotten their own ancestors." This is certainly true in many cases. Somehow, we often tend to have some notion that finding a link to "blue blood" would make us a little more special.

The truth is that if one searches back far enough one is probalby bound to find a link to nobility of sorts. Probably in more than one family line. One should just remember that many nobles were raised to the peerage from very humble origins, simply as a reward for services rendered to the crown, or for some heroic deed, or in many cases, had been purchased. A distant relation to some ancient baron or count may not necessarily mean a proper link to true "blue blood."

The big question for some is whethere the Labuschagne family has any links to noble blood. The answer is that no such link has so far been found. As far as known history is concerned, we come from the lines of ordinary people who sometimes had ordinary lives and sometimes not.

For those who really have a hunger for vague mysteries, however, there is one account which you may think about. According to one unnamed source, the name "Labuschagne" is derived from the French word for beef--"bucca." According to the legend, they were a faily of knights who formed a kind of royal guard for the French monarchy, much in the same fashion as the Beefeaters of the Tower of London. This is supposed to be vaguely supported out by the fact that one of the coats of arms which is allegedly associated with some part of the Labuschagne family, bears a knights helm, with two sets of crossed swords and two sets of fleur-de-lis. Romantic as this story may be, there is no known shred of evidence which would support it. The original author of this story has never been found, and very few people have ever heard about the legend. It therefore cannot be regarded as more than a legend and the propability of it being pure fantasy is far beyond the probable.

Those who are passionate about finding some noble ancestor, would simply have to search back further than anyone has ever done before, or would have to search amonst their other family branches. Also remember that for every noble character found in one's family tree, there will probably be scores of vagabonds and scoundrels of which one would not be equally proud. Be prepared to find the good, the bad and the ugly when digging into the closets of ancient family history. Remember there are no lifeguards in the family gene pool.

If any noble links can ever be found, this page will hopefully present the full story.
