About the Author

I am a ninth generation descendant of Pieter/Pierre de la Buscagne, who came to the Cape of Good Hope as a French Huguenot in search of a better life in 1710.

My ancestors left the Cape Colony with the Potgieter pioneers during the Great Trek, to settle near the present-day town of Zeerust, then near Potchefstroom, and finally to settle in the Heidelberg, Wakkerstroom and Piet Retief areas.

I grew up as the fifth generation on family farms between Piet Retief and Pongola. These properties had originally been selected by my two great-great grandfathers before the turn of the previous century when it was still largely no-mans land. Long before the days of fences and bureaucracy, roads or infrastructure.

I now live on the West-Rand of Johannesburg, where I am involved in the manufacturing of pressed automotive components. Among my many different hobbies, the most important are music, historical research, photography and genealogy.

I have been involved with family research since I was twelve years old and expect to be continuing the quest for putting the big picture together, for the rest of my life. At the time, my grandfather gave me an old Remington typewriter that had been standing in his garage for a long time. I was eager to use it, but couldn't think what for. One day two boyhood friends of my other grandfather's came to visit and they were brimming with stories about the old days. That very afternoon I started recording them on my typewriter. I never stopped recording family history after that. The old Remington was replaced by a series of computers a long time ago, but it is still in working condition after having given many years of faithful service.

The old Remington with which it all started

Please feel welcome to make contact at any time if I can be of assistance, or if you could help me help others by adding more information or correcting mistakes.

I look forward to meeting my unkown clansmen from around the world.
